Mount Entoto Addis Abeba
Things to Do in Entoto
Entoto, the highest peak overlooking the city of Addis Ababa, is part of the Entoto mountain chain, reaching 3,200 meters above sea level. It holds historical significance as the site where Menelik II resided and built his palace after moving from Ankober to establish Addis Ababa. The mountain is considered sacred and is home to many monasteries, as well as notable churches like Saint Raguel and Saint Mary.
The mountain is densely covered by eucalyptus trees, planted during the reign of Menelik II, which has earned it the nickname “the lung of Addis Ababa.” These forests play a vital role in the city’s environment, serving as a key source of firewood for the population.
In recent years, Entoto has become a major attraction due to the development of the Entoto Viewpoint and Entoto Park. The viewpoint offers stunning panoramic views of Addis Ababa, making it a popular spot for visitors. Entoto Park, a cultural and recreational hub, features walking and cycling paths, picnic areas, and spaces for outdoor activities. It also includes cultural exhibits, cafes, and restaurants, blending leisure, nature, and history in a serene environment that promotes tourism and conservation.
